STATESBORO - Spring practice is in the books and the Eagles now turn their attention to off-season workouts before reporting in early August for preseason camp. GSEagles.com caught up with each position coach to get a breakdown of their respective depth chart as well as their thoughts on their position group. Up second is the offensive line with Coach Geep Wade.
What were your overall thoughts on your group this spring?
These guys are hungry. Every kid here works hard and I'm proud of the spring we had. These guys bought into some new techniques with Coach Ruse's offense and these guys are already ready to get back this summer to get ready for the fall.
What or who pleasantly surprised you this spring?
These kids have been coached well, we're just doing something different. They had some tools and fundamentals from previous coaching. They're an older group that's really hungry. They're further along than I thought they'd be and that's giving credit where credit is due. I thought Caleb Kelly had a phenomenal spring. He's changed his body. He's athletic and I need to keep some weight on him this summer with Coach Matt. His twitch and athleticism is what we're looking for in Coach Ruse's offense.
What needs to priority number on the first day of camp this August?
We have to continue to have competition and having guys push each other. Every one of those guys still have things to work on. I don't want these guys getting complacent and thinking they don't have anything to work on, so that's one thing we have to fight. Having those guys back from last year gives us a chance to build a little continuity, but we have to keep improving every day. We want to perfect our craft and we need to work on that from day one. But at Georgia Southern, it's about pad level and out-efforting people. That's in our DNA and that's what this group has bought in to.
What young player stepped up this spring?
Caleb Cook for certain. Here's a guy who got here in January who had an amazing spring. He played all 15 spring practices as the back-up left guard and started in the spring game when the teams split. He's a great kid who's an A/B student. I get texts from the academic people saying what a great job he's doing. For a kid who should be a senior in high school, to do what he did this spring, I think I take that for granted sometimes. I can be hard on him sometimes, but I have to sit back and remember he's never been through a spring practice. Heck, he's going back home to graduate from high school next month, so yeah, it's been a great spring for Caleb.
Who are the leaders of your group?
There's not one real alpha dog. Logan Langemeier is the vocal leader. Aaron Dowdell is more of a leader by example. Brian Miller is a vocal leader and Caleb Kelly is a leader by example. Really, the whole first group serves as leaders. I 'd love to have one guy who could be The Guy when the stuff hits the fan and can reel them back in without me saying anything, but yeah, we have a bunch of leaders.
