Georgia Southern will compete for the Sun Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional when the Eagles travel to El Dorado, Arkansas, for the Sun Belt Championship, which starts Sunday, April 25, at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
The Sun Belt champion will be determined by match play for the fifth straight championship. The teams play 18 holes Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and the top-4 teams advance to match play Wednesday. The top seed will take on the fourth seed, and No. 2 will meet No. 3 in a morning session with the winners squaring off in the afternoon.
The event will be held at Mystic Creek Golf Cub for the first time. Georgia Southern won the tournament in 2015 (stroke play only) and has advanced to match play in each of the last three championships. The Eagles (43) are one of six Sun Belt teams ranked in the top-100, according to the most recent Golfstat rankings, joining Arkansas State (54), Little Rock (57), Coastal Carolina (86), ULM (89) and Louisiana (99).
The Eagles are coming off a third-place finish in their last event, the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club. Ben Carr and Brett Barron tied for seventh, Mason Williams tied for 11th and Jake Maples tied for 23rd.
Barron and Maples are playing a fifth season after the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to all spring sport student-athletes because of COVID-19. Both played in the first nine tournaments of the season and are slated to be in the lineup this week along with Carr, Williams and Luke Dasher.
Barron makes his 41st career start this week and has been in the lineup in the last 22 tournaments, and Carr makes his 28th start in the lineup for the Eagles. Maples makes his 21st career start in the lineup, and Williams makes his 23rd career start. Dasher will be in the lineup for the third time in his career.
It's the second Sun Belt Championship appearance for Carr, Barron and Maples and the first for Williams and Dasher. Carr tied for seventh in 2019 in Destin, Florida, Barron finished 14th and Maples tied for 15th.
The Eagles are paired with Arkansas State and Little Rock for Sunday's first round and will tee off the first hole at 9:30 a.m. ET.
