Long Balls Down Eagles in Conference Opener

TROY, Ala. - Georgia Southern baseball had a late rally in the ninth, but fell to the Troy Trojans 8-4 on Sunday afternoon in Alabama. The Eagles fall to 10-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The Trojans improve to 10-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

Ben Johnson falls to 1-1 on the season, while Bay Witcher improved to 3-1 on the season. In the bottom of the first the Trojans would take the lead on a solo-shot. The Eagles would respond in the top of the second with a Matt Anderson bunt single and a Sam Blancato fielder's choice.

The Trojans would score seven unanswered runs throughout the second, third and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth Noah Ledford would crush his third home run of the series, Ledford finished the afternoon 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk. 

Nick Jones came on in relief in the fifth, working three and a third innings of two hit baseball. He struck out a career-high seven strikeouts. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday evening at SRP Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

  • Four different Eagles had an RBI this afternoon in the 8-4 loss.
  • Eagle pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts on the afternoon, while Trojans pitchers only struck out three Eagle batters.

Georgia Southern will be back in action on Tuesday evening at SRP Park in North Augusta, South Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from SRP Park against Clemson.
