Women’s Golf Tied for Fifth after First Round of the Strutter
2/21/2021 9:03:00 PM | Women's Golf
The Eagles will finish the second and third rounds tomorrow.
STATESBORO – Ella Ofstedahl shot a 77, which tied for the eighth-best score of the morning session, and the Georgia Southern women's golf team is tied for fifth after the first round of the Strutter Gus Invitational Sunday at Georgia Southern University Golf Course.
Play was suspended because of darkness with the teams having between 4-7 holes left in the second round. They will finish those Monday, beginning at 8:30 a.m., and roll into the third and final round immediately after.
Illinois State led the event after the first round by a stroke over UNCG. Jacksonville State is third, followed by Seminole State, and the Eagles are tied for fifth with Georgia State.
Ofstedahl made five straight pars as she made the turn and added a birdies at 11 and 16 on the back. Alberte Thuesen and Abby Newton each shot a 79 in the first round. Newton led the Eagles with three birdies in the round, and Thuesen made birdie at 3 and 8 to play the front nine even par.
The course played especially difficult in the morning. Because of the amount of rain the area has received recently, balls were sticking in the fairway instead of rolling. Conditions improved in the afternoon as the course dried out and should continue to improve for play tomorrow.
