Carr picks up his first career collegiate win.
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Ben Carr shot a 68, the second-lowest round of the tournament, to post his first career collegiate win and lead the Eagles to a tie for third in the Scenic City Collegiate Tuesday at The Honors Course.
It was the eighth career top-10 finish for Carr, who shot even par for the tournament and won the event by two strokes over Khavish Varadan of UAB. The Eagles (+29) posted the third-lowest team score of the day to move up three places and tie for third with Little Rock. UAB (+14) won the tournament, and ETSU (+20) took second. It was the first tournament of the season for the Eagles and their first since winning the Colleton River Collegiate last March 3.
Mason Williams (+6) shot a 70, tied for the third lowest of the day, to tie for ninth, and Colin Bowles (+9) placed 15th, keyed by yesterday's second-round 69. Carr led the field in par-5 scoring and in birdies with 15, while Jake Maples led the field in pars with 37.
The course showed its teeth throughout the event as the average score for the first two rounds Monday was 78.02, and the average for today's final round was 78.63. Carr was the only individual to finish par or better, and there was a total of 17 rounds of par or better in the three-round event that featured 63 players.
Quotables from Coach Carter Collins
"This course played very difficult, one of the toughest I've ever been at as a golf coach. Every shot was demanding, and the margins for error were extremely tight. Overall, it was a great experience to compete at The Honors Course."
"We are very proud of Ben for earning his first collegiate championship, especially at The Honors Course. It takes incredible golf to compete at this golf course and even more special golf to win at this course, and he excelled in both areas."
"I'm proud of the team for finishing third. We played better each round, and I think that shows we're on a good trajectory for the rest of the fall. We can't wait to get back started. I'm so proud of these guys and all the work they have put in, and I can't wait to hit the road with them next week to Birmingham. GATA!"
