STATESBORO - Georgia Southern Head Men's Soccer Coach
John Murphy has rounded out his coaching staff for the upcoming 2020 season with the addition of two new coaches for the Eagles.
Matty Evans will be joining the staff as an Assistant Coach, while
Joe Moulden will be a Volunteer Assistant Coach.
Evans joins the Eagles from Appalachian State, where he was on the staff of the Mountaineers from March, 2019, until the school announced it would discontinue the sport in Spring of this year. In his one season with the Mountaineers, Appalachian State collected 11 wins - the most since 2002 - and also recorded eight shutouts. He previously coached at Lander University, helping the Bearcats to a 16-2-3 mark in 2018 and an NCAA Southeast Region championship, and at West Chester, where the Rams went 14-3-2 overall in 2017 and a perfect 11-0 in PSAC play, capturing the conference championship. West Chester advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 for the first time in 50 years.
Evans was a two-year standout goalkeeper at Seton Hill University, where he started in 36 career matches and totalling more than 3,000 minutes of playing time between the posts. He helped the team to a school record 12 wins in 2015, while his eight shutouts were the fourth most in conference history. He totaled 131 saves in two seasons with a career save percentage of .744. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in sports management from Seton Hill and will be pursuing his master's degree while at Georgia Southern.
"I would like to welcome Matt and his wife Rachel to Statesboro," Coach Murphy said. "Matt joins us with an excellent background in the game as both a player and coach. He is very well thought of in the region as a young coach on the rise, and we feel he will fit in very well with our program. During his time at App State, the men's soccer program had great success both on and off the field, and his contribution was evident as a coach, recruiter and administrator. As a goalkeeper specialist he will give our talented group the attention they deserve, but will also be provided a broad coaching role. More importantly, as the Director of Student-Athlete Development, he will help oversee our program's strategy for helping each of our players reach his own academic, athletic and social success."
Moulden, meanwhile, joins the Eagles from Butler University, where he wrapped up a stellar four-year career for the Bulldogs in 2018. The defender and team captain as a senior started 76 matches over his four seasons and earned second-team All BIG EAST honors as a junior in 2017, as well as All-BIG EAST Tournament honors and Third-Team Great Lakes All-Region honors by the United Soccer Coaches. A native of Bolton, England, Moulden earned his bachelor's degree in human movement, health science and education from Butler in 2019 and will be pursuing his master's degree from Georgia Southern, while also serving as a teaching assistant in the Kinesiology department.
"Joe had an outstanding college career at Butler and earned consistent success that we are all striving for here in our program," Coach Murphy said. "He is a winner, and that attitude will eventually rub off on our players. Joe has a great interest in a career in coaching and we feel this will be an excellent platform for him to grow and develop. His ability to analyze the game and work with players one on one will make a big difference for our kids moving forward."Â
