Flurry Of Threes Sends UT Arlington Past GS Women's Basketball, 101-73

Mavs hit a school-record 14 threes; Alexis Brown's 23 points leads GS

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington hit a school-record 14 three-pointers to collect a 101-73 Sun Belt Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Saturday.

The Mavericks (18-10, 12-4 SBC) clinched at least a top four spot in the Sun Belt standings with the win, while Georgia Southern (9-19, 6-11 SBC) now sees its tournament hopes come down to next Saturday's Rivalry Series matchup at Georgia State.

The Eagles started off quickly against the Mavs as Alexis Brown hit for eight points in the first five minutes, giving Georgia Southern a 13-8 lead at the first media time out. UT Arlington, however, went on a shooting spree from long range, making five straight three-pointers to turn a five-point deficit into a 22-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Mavericks continued to shoot well from beyond the arc in a second quarter that saw UTA put up 32 points and build a 54-30 lead at the break. The second half saw the Mavericks reach the 100-point plateau for just the seventh time in school history, and the first time since scoring 100 vs. Arkansas State on Jan. 19, 2019.

Brown finished the day with a game-high with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-7 three-pointers and 3-of-3 free throws. Mya Burns hit 4-of-5 threes for 12 points, while Nikki McDonald added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

UT Arlington had three players with 20+ points - Claire Chastain (22 pts) and seniors Aysia Evans and Marie Benson, who each had 20 points on Senior Day.

Eagle of the Game
Brown's 23 points tied a season-high for the senior, and it was her third 20+ point performance of the season. The senior's four threes give her 164 for her career, which moves her into third place on the all-time GS three-point chart, ahead of Alie Rousseau (163, 1998-2001).

Stat of the Game
UT Arlington had a school-record 33 assists in the contest, which is one of the top 10 single-season assist performances in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season.

Quotables
Head Coach Anita Howard on the game against the Mavericks
"It's Senior Night [for UT Arlington], it's time to have fun and go out for your seniors. They're at home, they're comfortable. We contested some of those threes, but they were on tonight. We didn't do a good job of getting the ball out of their hands at the 3-point line. But this is what you do on your home court. This is how we shoot at Hanner on some nights. It was just their night tonight."

Next Up
Georgia Southern closes out the regular season on Saturday, March 7, traveling to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in a Southern vs. State Rivalry Series matchup with the Panthers at 2 p.m. at Georgia State Sports Arena.
