ORLANDO, Fla. - Georgia Southern softball rapped out a season-high 14 hits in downing Charleston Southern, 9-4, to wrap up action in the Citrus Classic on Sunday morning at the Disney/ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.
The Eagles (8-2) finished the weekend 4-1 by knocking off the Buccaneers (1-4) for the second time during the Classic. Georgia Southern will next host the 2020 Eagle Round Robin on Friday through Sunday, February 21-23, at Beautiful Eagle Field.
Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on sophomore
Faith Shirley's RBI single, then broke the game open with a five-run third inning that featured an RBI double from freshman
Bailee Wilson, a two-run single from senior
Alia Booth and an RBI single from sophomore
Ashlynn Gunter.
Freshman
Kyleigh Richardson, meanwhile, made her Eagle debut in the circle a memorable one, hurling three innings of one-hit shutout ball to record her first collegiate win.
"We took advantage of seeing the pitcher Charleston Southern closed out last night's game with," Georgia Southern Head Coach
Kim Dean said. "We had a stronger approach at the plate from our previous game. Kyleigh had a really good outing in her first start, followed by Harlee [Rewis] getting us the ground balls we needed and Ashleigh [Morton] closing things out."
Sophomore
Shelby Barfield went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while senior
Mekhia Freeman went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored. Charleston Southern starter Annah Junge (1-1) took the loss in the circle for the Buccaneers, giving up six hits and four runs in two innings of work, walking one.
"It was really hard fought softball throughout the weekend," Coach Dean said. "We just came up a little bit short against Lehigh, and we took a lot of lessons from that moving forward. We had good outings from our pitching staff, our defense and our hitting. Overall just a solid weekend as we're doing everything we can to prepare for conference."
