Birmingham, Ala. – The Georgia Southern track and field team had three distance runners stay behind at the Samford invite to try and improve their 5000m times Saturday morning.
Merabu Nagwandala, Carley Braman and Mattie Harris all stayed the night in Birmingham to compete in the 5000m Saturday with a pretty good showing. Nagwandala placed second in the event with a time of 17:49.29 while Braman finished eighth (18:44.11) and Harris finished 10th (19:00.61).
While all three times were close, none were able to eclipse their indoor season bests. The Sun Belt Conference allows the top-16 to compete in the 5000m at the championship meet. Nagwandala currently ranks fifth and Braman at 15th as of Saturday morning.
What distance coach Wesley Penberthy had to say:
"The 5K this morning was a great tune-up for conference. We really got a chance to run through some race strategies. Now it's time to get one last training push before conference.
