Winning Streak Extends to Five With 5-2 Win Over Mercer

Georgia Southern Plays Bethune-Cookman and Stetson Saturday

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team won its fifth straight match Wednesday in a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Mercer at the Wallis Tennis Center.
 
The Eagles (7-5) outlasted the Bears (2-5) in a nearly 4-hour contest that was very tight early on after Mercer took the doubles point. The Bears also secured the first singles point from the one slot to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles did not allow another point.
 
Getting the Eagles back on track were wins big singles wins by Alexandros Roumpis and Pascal Wagemaker to tie it up 2-2. Jonathan Morales gave the Eagles their first lead before Diego Finkelstein clinched it from the four spot with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 defeat of Hugo Lobo.  
 
The win improves Georgia Southern to 5-0 at home and equals the longest winning streak from the 2019 season.
 
Finkelstein's singles win now gives him the third most total career singles wins in GS history with 71.  
 
What head coach Sander Koning said:
"It was a hard-fought win today. Mercer really battled hard and it came down to small margins. We were able to convert points at the right time and keep our momentum going."
 
"The atmosphere at the facility was great and I want to thank everyone who came out to support us."
 
Next Up:
The Eagles travel to Bethune-Cookman and Stetson Saturday for matches at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.
