The Eagles will play 18 conference games inside the East Division.
NEW ORLEANS – In order to focus on the health and safety of its student-athletes, the Sun Belt has amended its 2020-21 basketball schedule and altered its conference championship format, the league announced today.
The conference will consist of two divisions, East and West, and teams will play 18 games inside their own division beginning New Year's Day. Schools will play two games per visit at four schools in their division and host the same teams for a two-game series in addition to playing a home-and-home series with a rival opponent.
The Eagles play four games against Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and Troy, and will play a home-and-home with Georgia State. Georgia Southern plays host to South Alabama Jan. 1 and 2, Troy Jan. 15 and 16, Coastal Carolina Jan. 29 and 30, Georgia State Feb. 13 and Appalachian State Feb. 26-27.
The Sun Belt Tournament is set for March 5-8 in Pensacola, Florida, at the Pensacola Bay Center and Hartsell Arena at Pensacola State College. The top two teams in each division will receive byes and first-round games will be cross division (#3 in East plays #6 in West).
"The new schedule provides the safest environment possible for our student-athletes," said Georgia Southern men's basketball coach Brian Burg. "We're excited to have a schedule in place, and we look forward to our first Sun Belt game in Hanner Fieldhouse on New Year's Day."
Tip times for conference games will be announced by each institution.
