STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern women's soccer fell to Eastern division leader South Alabama 1-0 on Friday night at Eagle Field. The Jaguars improved to 7-3-0 on the season and 7-2-0 in conference play, while the Eagles fall to 2-8-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in conference play.
The two sides played the first 20 minutes of the match, feeling each other out. Neither side recorded a shot on goal attempt until Gracie Wilson had a shot in the 21st minute. Wilson slotted the ball to the bottom right corner, after a solid buildup play to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. The Eagles and Jaguars would both swap possessions for the next 65 minutes.
In the final minute and a half of the game, Georgia Southern played a few great balls into the box, after Marcela Montoya was found outside the area. The Montoya shot attempt was saved by Anita Gudmundsdottir just over the bar, which allowed the Eagles to have two more attempts on a bouncing ball off the corner kick.
The Eagles will close out the home slate of their season on Sunday afternoon against Troy. Sunday GS will honor five seniors who have left their legacies in Statesboro.
