Eagles excited to be on the court together.
STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern men's basketball program had its first team practice of the 2020-21 season Wednesday in Hanner Fieldhouse.
A palpable feeling of excitement permeated through the arena as a day that took a little longer than usual to arrive finally came.
"I give credit to our players," said first-year head coach Brian Burg. "These guys have faced a lot of adversity with the pandemic. This is out of everyone's comfort zone, but they have all bonded together. We're a no-excuse culture, and I think we're right on track. Guys are working and buying into the process, and our players come to work every day with a high level of consistency."
Burg started the workout by telling the Eagles that they needed to identify what causes the team adversity in practice and work together for solutions. He also told the Eagles that there is no substitute for hard work, no "magic pill."
The Eagles are scheduled for two more team workouts this week. Burg and his coaching staff have established their expectations and their process to get better, and the emphasis for the first week of practice will be their team identity.
"This first week, we really want to focus in on our identity - who we are as a basketball program and establishing that the first week of practice and then moving forward over our 30 practices over 42 days," said Burg.
Georgia Southern is coming off its third consecutive 20-win season and advanced to the Sun Belt Championship Semifinals for the third straight campaign.
