Georgia Southern Returns To South Carolina in Two Weeks

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern track and field team is back in action after seven weeks off at the Gamecock Opener Friday and Saturday on the campus of the University of South Carolina inside the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex.

Many teams, primarily from the Southeast, are expected at the two-day competition.

The last indoor competition occurred back on Dec. 7, 2019 at the Clemson Opener. At the meet, the Eagles won two events and broke a school record. Merabu Nagwandala broke the Georgia Southern school record in the 3000m at 10:23.65 with a third-place finish while Scovia Ayikoru placed second in the 200m with a time of 24.79, the fourth best indoor time in Georgia Southern history.  Ayikoru also won the 400m with a time of 56.11.

Currently, the Eagles hold top five Sun Belt marks in four events. Ayikoru ranks second in the 200m and first in the 400m while Nagwandala ranks third in both the mile and 3000m.

What head coach Kelly Carter had to say:
"I'm very excited about the upcoming meet at South Carolina. This is our first meet after the holiday break, and I know our ladies have worked hard and are looking forward to having a place to compete and prepare for the upcoming indoor championships."

Up Next:
Following the meet, the team will have a week off before returning to Columbia for the Carolina Challenge Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
