SCORECARD

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern rifle squad kicked off its 2019-20 season Saturday at the Shooting Sports Education Center, hosting SoCon foes UAB and Wofford. The Eagles posted a 4,453 in the first action of the season, splitting a pair of matches.

The Eagles posted a 2,179 in smallbore, putting them 25 points behind Wofford after the first discipline. Highlighted by Lilly Herring overcoming a line malfunction and having to start over and shoot all 60 shots in 55 minutes, GS rallied to shoot a 2,274 in air rifle to edge Wofford by four points, 4,453-4,449. UAB scored 4,550 points on the day to win both matches.

Senior Lydia Odlin got the season off to a strong start, posting a 196 in the prone smallbore, which was a career-high and tied for the fourth-best score in program history. She came back strong in air rifle, posting a 574, which was the second-best score on the team. She finished the day with a 1,114 aggregate.

The Eagles had four freshmen on the line making their collegiate debuts. Ashly Judson led the squad, posting the highest scores all around. She started with a 554 smallbore and then hit the first 100 series of the season when she was perfect in the second air rifle series en route to a team-high 575. Her aggregate of 1,129 led the team as well and was the fifth-best overall total of the day. Faye Bryans (547-563-1,110) placed ninth overall while Gabby Morrow (526-562-1,088) and Lilly Herring (538-546-1,084) also shot high marks and thrived in their first collegiate action, as well.

Words From Coach Worman:
"The freshmen got a lot of different things thrown at them today. It's Family Weekend and their first match representing Georgia Southern. Under these circumstances, it's easy to revert to old habits that didn't work, but they resisted and kept coming back to the new habits. These girls have a belief in themselves and believe that they can do this and that they belong here. I'm proud of this team today. We'll use today as a starting point and build on it as we begin the season in earnest."
