NEW ORLEANS – Steven Fisk,
Ben Carr and
Jake Maples were named All-Sun Belt, and
Carter Collins was named Coach of the Year, the conference announced today following a vote of the league's coaches.
Fisk earned Golfer of the Year honors for the second straight season and first-team all-conference accolades for the third consecutive year. The finalist for the Haskins Award and semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award has six victories this season and nine for his career, which is a school record, passing Jodie Mudd's eight (1978-82). Twenty-three of his 32 rounds played this season have been par or better with 18 rounds in the 60s, and the senior shot a course and tournament record 61 in the second round of the Sun Belt Championship April 22 en route to taking medalist honors for the second time.
Carr was named second-team all-conference after posting a 71.85 season scoring average with four top-10 and six top-20 finishes. His scoring average is currently the lowest for a freshman in Georgia Southern history. He took fourth at the Schenkel Invitational March 17, helping the Eagles to their second team title in the 40-years of the tournament, and the freshman tied for seventh at the AutoTrader Intercollegiate and the Sun Belt Championship.
Maples was named third-team All-Sun Belt after posting five top-25 finishes and recording a 71.91 scoring average so far this spring. The junior took ninth at Stanford Regional (206, -4), helping the Eagles advance to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 2010, and tied for 15th at the Sun Belt Championship. He placed second in the Georgia Southern Individual Collegiate to open the spring.
Collins earns Coach of the Year honors for the second time in the Eagles' five seasons in the Sun Belt as he won the honor in 2015, his first as head coach. The Eagles have made eight NCAA Regional appearances, advancing to the NCAA Championship finals twice, and won three conference championships during his 12-year tenure on the coaching staff.
GS is one of 30 teams competing for a national championship this weekend as the Eagles play at The Blessings Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Eagles tee off the 10th hole at 9:40 a.m. ET in the first round tomorrow.
