Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida spun a three-hit shutout to claim a 4-0 non-conference softball victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Wednesday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Ospreys moved to 12-8 on the season with the win, while Georgia Southern fell to 13-11. The Eagles return to action on Friday, hosting Coastal Carolina in the first game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Eagle Field. Friday's game time has been moved up to 2 p.m. from its originally scheduled 5:30 p.m. time due to expected weather issues.
North Florida scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead, Paige Pfent and Makenzie Griffin had back-to-back two-out RBI singles to stake the home team to the lead.
The Ospreys then added solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, by Veronika Klimplova and Dominica Cocuzza, respectively.
The Eagles had several chances to break through, but twice hit into inning-ending double plays. The best chance for Georgia Southern to score came in the fifth when Ashlynn Gunter and Ellington Day both reached on errors, giving the Eagles runners at second and third with nobody out. But a ground ball by Shayla Smith resulted in Gunter being thrown out at the plate, then Mekhia Freeman lined into a double play to end the inning.
"Any time you're hitting line drives, with baserunners on, it's worth the risk to take strong leads," Georgia Southern Head Coach Kim Dean said. "We were squaring up the ball, but we were just hitting it right at people. It's a little tough to handle because six inches either way, it's a much different play. I do think we are executing a little bit better. We're forcing issues with teams, putting the ball in play, but we're not getting that timely hit we need. We're not getting the productivity out of the meat of our order like we were to start the season. Sometimes lineups go in slumps and we're in one right now."
Sydney Matzko (5-4) notched the win for the Ospreys, limiting the Eagles to three hits while striking out five. Shelby Barfield (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Eagles, giving up two hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings of work, walking one.
