STORYLINES
- After a false start on Tuesday night against Georgia Tech, the Eagles open the 2019 home schedule this weekend with a three game series against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Mountaineers were a mainstay in Statesboro in the 1980s, playing from 1984-1991 in Coach Stallings' annual tournaments.
- Georgia Southern went to extra innings for the second-straight game on Sunday. The Eagles dropped a 4-3 decision to the No. 15 Auburn Tigers in the series finale, going 13 innings with the Tigers for the second time in 24 hours.
- Georgia Southern holds a 16-6 lead in the all-time series against West Virginia and has taken two of three in both of the previous weekend sets. The Eagles won the first two games in 1992 before dropping the finale. In 2015, the most recent meetings, the Eagles took the opener 7-4 and the finale 15-2.
- The Eagles opened the 2019 season with 35 innings of play against No. 15 Auburn. The three games took more than 12 hours to play, clocking in at a total of 12:11. Friday's game, an 11-2 loss, was the quickest of the three at a brisk 3:15.
- Saturday's win over Auburn came thanks to a 13th inning bomb of a home run off the bat of
Noah Ledford. The freshman crushed his first collegiate long ball an estimated 430 feet to the gap in right. The home run was the first for an Eagle in extra innings since March 8, 2008 when Matt Miller hit a 10th inning bomb to walk it off against Pittsburgh in a tournament in Greenville, N.C.
- Last weekend's twin 13 inning games was a first for the Eagles in recorded history. The Eagles played back-to-back 13 inning contests for the first time in school history. The games were also the longest games (by innings) since February 24, 2016 when the Eagles went 16 innings in the home opener against Georgia Tech.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will go on the road on Tuesday night with a trip to Mount Pleasant to face the College of Charleston. The Eagles and Cougars get things started at 6 p.m. at the Patriot's Point Complex.
