STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern softball team split a pair of games Sunday on the final day of the Eagle Round Robin, falling to UMKC 2-1 before bouncing back to take care of Mount St. Mary's, 6-1.
GAME 1: UMKC 2, GS 1
After a scoreless first two frames, UMKC finally broke through with a suicide squeeze bunt and then later a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning,
Logan Harrell ripped a solo home run down the line, her fourth of the season.
On the final play of the game,
Shelby Wilson tried to score on an error but was thrown out at home to end the game.
Rylee Waldrep (L, 2-2) was superb, but picked up the tough-luck loss. She allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits with three strikeouts against two walks.
Harrell had the lone hit for the Eagles.
GAME 2: GS 6, Mount St. Mary's 1
The Eagles got a bases-loaded walk from
Hannah Farrell and then
Alia Booth drove in the second run with an RBI groundout. The Mount got one of those runs back in the top of the third inning but
Allyssah Mullis ripped a double to the gap for two RBI to make it 4-1 in the bottom half of the inning.
Ashlynn Gunter later added a sacrifice fly to end the three-run inning.
Shayla Smith doubled in the fourth inning and came home on
Faith Shirley's single to right field to cap off the scoring.
Shirley and Wilson led the way with two hits apiece while Farrell, Mullis, Smith and
Ellington Day all had one hit.
Ashleigh Morton (W, 3-2) picked up the win by going four innings. She allowed a run on five hits with a strikeout.
Shelby Barfield picked up the three-inning save, allowing no runs on two hits with a walk.
The Eagles (9-4) will return to action next weekend, traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina, to play in a three-day event hosted by NC State at Dail Stadium. The Eagles are scheduled to play Murray State, NC State and UMBC while in the Tar Heel State.
