MACON - Mercer softball used a three-run fifth inning to pick up a 5-4 midweek victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Wednesday evening at Sikes Field in Macon.
The Bears improved to 3-3 with the win, while Georgia Southern falls to 4-3. The Eagles return to action on Friday, hosting the first day of the three-day Eagle Round Robin at Eagle Field in Statesboro, taking on IUPUI and Morehead State at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Mercer tallied single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles had the bases loaded in the third inning, but an inning-ending double play kept GS off the scoreboard.
Georgia Southern finally broke through in the sixth as Logan Harrell reached on a one-out single, then Faith Shirley reached on a fielding error. Shelby Wilson followed with a three-run blast to left center, her second of the season, to put the Eagles in front, 3-2.
The lead would be short lived as Mercer answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two scoring on an error and one on an RBI single from Megan Lane.
The Eagles would load the bases again with one out in the seventh, and an RBI fielder's choice by Allyssah Mullis would cut the lead to one run, but Mercer pitcher Lynn Gardner would strike out the Eagles' Macy Coleman to end the game.
"It was our first time getting on the road," Georgia Southern Head Coach Kim Dean said. "Kudos to Mercer, they definitely kept pushing after we took the lead in the sixth. They took advantage of a couple of mistakes. Even though it's early, I'm hoping we will take these innings and learn as fast as we can, so we can start to create wins from these situation and prepare for Sun Belt play. We definitely had our opportunities tonight."
Gardner (3-0) hurled seven innings of six-hit ball, giving up four unearned runs, walking four and striking out five to get the win. Ashleigh Morton (1-2) took the loss in the circle for the Eagles, giving up seven hits and five runs - two earned - in four-plus innings of work, walking four while striking out six.
Wilson went 2-for-3 with her home run and three RBI to lead GS offensively, while Mercer was led Shaila Warren's 3-for-4 day with two doubles and two RBI.
