STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern softball squad rebounded from a pair of losses on Saturday to finish the Bash in the Boro on a strong note with a pair of wins Sunday at Eagle Field. The Eagles took care of UT Martin 6-3 and then took care of Savannah State, 4-1, to finish the opening weekend at 4-2.
GAME 1: GS 6, UT Martin 3
Georgia Southern jumped on UTM pitcher Hannah Ridolfi early, scoring three runs in the first inning.
Hannah Farrell drove in
Faith Shirley with a double to left field and then
Macy Weeks drove in
Shelby Wilson and Farrell with a double to the gap.
An RBI groundout from Wilson in the second inning plated another run to make it 4-0 and
Logan Harrell's RBI groundout plated pinch runner
Ellington Day in the third inning to stretch the lead to five. Later in the inning
Mekhia Freeman singled home a run to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead. The Skyhawks (3-2) chipped away late and scored three runs, but the Eagles held on for their third win of the season.
Freshman
Ashleigh Morton (W, 1-1) went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with a strikeout.
Jess Mazur picked up a pair of strikeouts in two inning of relief.
At the plate, Shirley, Freeman, Farrell, Weeks, Freeman and
Ashlynn Gunter each had a hit for the Eagles.
GAME 2: GS 4, Savannah State 1
The Eagles loaded up the bases in the first inning and struck first when
Allyssah Mullis drew a walk.
Macy Coleman then added a sac fly to plate Freeman and make it 2-0. Freeman scored in the third inning on an error and then Farrell came on home on Coleman's second sac fly of the game to double the lead.
That would be all
Rylee Waldrep (W, 2-1) would need as she allowed an unearned run and just three hits in seven innings. The sophomore had four strikeouts and walked none.
Freeman had two hits to lead the way while Farrell,
Logan Harrell all had had one.
The Eagles will travel to Macon for a single game at Mercer on Wednesday at 5 p.m. before returning home next weekend to host the Eagle Round Robin.
