STATESBORO - Georgia Southern senior defender Gonzalo Talavera has been named to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Men's Scholar All-South Region squad, announced this week by the organization.
Talavera earns a spot on the second team as a defender by carrying a 3.93 GPA in Business Administration-Management. The Madrid, Spain, native graduated just this past weekend with his bachelor's degree, completing it in just three years. He adds the United Soccer Coaches academic honor to his CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 team honors earned last month.
"Gonzalo has ended his career here in Statesboro as one of the top student-athletes ever to play men's soccer for Georgia Southern;" Head Men's Soccer Coach John Murphy said. "He has left a high standard that every one of our team members should strive for on the pitch and in the classroom. Gonzalo was my very first recruit here, and it's amazing how quickly the time has passed. I am grateful for how he has represented our program, both on and off the field."
