STATESBORO - Junior midfielder
Aldair Cortes has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by league officials.
Cortes delivered a pair of second-half goals in Friday night's 3-2 come-from-behind win over Wofford. Trailing 2-1, Cortes scored in the 69th minute to tie the match up at 2-all against the Terriers. Then, the Cairo, Ga., native delivered a free kick goal from 29' out in the 82nd minute to break the deadlock and send the Eagles to the win.
It is the second game-winning free kick for Cortes this season after he hit a shot in the 88th minute to beat North Florida, 2-1, earlier this season. On the year, Cortes has four goals and two assists, ranking among the Top 10 in the Sun Belt in both goals scored and points (10).
This is the first offensive Player of the Week honor for Cortes in his career. He was named the co-defensive Player of the Week by the Sun Belt on Oct. 3, 2017.
Cortes and the Eagles are in action this evening, taking on South Carolina at 7 p.m. in Columbia.
