Women’s Soccer Claims Win Over Rival Georgia State

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women's soccer team won 2-0 to rival Georgia State on Sunday afternoon.

The first goal of the match was scored by Nora Falnes just 25 seconds into the game. Dani Coumbs crossed the ball to the top of the box. Falnes took the shot from just outside of the box to score.

Frida Brattum scored the winning goal for the Eagles. The Panthers' goalkeeper tried to kick the ball away from the top of the box. Brattum got behind the ball and shot from outside of the top-right of the box, over the goalkeeper and a Georgia State defender to score.

The Eagles had a total of seven shots. Falnes had one shot, Coumbs took two, Maddie Klintworth had one shot and Brattum took three shots. Five of the seven shots were on goal.

Goalkeeper Sallie Newton led the defense in the shutout against Georgia State in her first collegiate start. The Panthers had eight shots on goal and Newton saved all eight.

An aggressive game from both teams resulted in 18 fouls between the two teams.

The win puts Georgia Southern ahead 2-0 in the Southern vs. State Rivalry Series after men's soccer defeated the Panthers 2-1 in Atlanta on Saturday night.

WHAT INTERIM HEAD COACH JOSH MOFFET SAID

"It's a great win. It's something we talked about at the start of the season when we were looking at goals we wanted to set. I'm not the one usually to say we need to focus on one game more than the rest but this is one that we just naturally focus on: when do we play State? I'm very proud of the team. We just talked about traditions and this is one tradition that we're going to grow and we're going to continue to keep the points rolling on the board in the Sun Belt and the Southern versus State rivalry."

LOOKING AHEAD
