The Eagles meet Florida Atlantic in their first game of the tournament.
NASSAU, Bahamas – The Georgia Southern men's basketball team will compete in the 2018 Islands of the Bahamas Showcase, a tournament featuring 12 total games during the three-day event Nov. 16-18 at Kendal Isaacs National Gymnasium in Nassau.
Defending Big Sky champion Montana, Towson, Florida Atlantic, Miami (Ohio), Incarnate Word, North Dakota State and Pepperdine join Georgia Southern in the field. It's the second year of the tournament, and all eight teams will reside at the exclusive Baha Mar resort.
"Tournament experience is extremely valuable for teams, and the fact that we can play one in the Bahamas will be great for our team," said Georgia Southern coach Mark Byington. "Everything we do is to prepare us for the Sun Belt Tournament in March, and this experience will teach us a lot. We were able to play in a championship game last year in Florida, and I know it helped that team."
Georgia Southern will take on Florida Atlantic in its first contest of the tournament at 5 p.m. ET Friday, Nov. 16. The Eagles meet either Towson or Pepperdine in Saturday's contest at either 2 p.m. or 8 p.m. ET.
It will be the first meeting between the Eagles and Owls on the hardwood. GS is 1-1 against Pepperdine with the last meeting coming in 1995, and the Eagles lost 70-67 to Towson in the first meeting between the schools in the 2017 Gulf Coast Showcase championship contest. GS is one of two teams in the field that won 20-plus contests last season, joining NCAA Tournament participant Montana, which posted a 26-8 record.
Opening tournament schedule:
• 11 a.m. ET – Montana vs. Incarnate Word
• 2 p.m. ET – Miami (OH) vs. North Dakota State
• 5 p.m. ET – Georgia Southern vs. FAU
• 8 p.m. ET – Towson vs. Pepperdine
Consolation games will be played Saturday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m./2 p.m. followed by the semifinals at 5 p.m./8 p.m. Sunday's championship game will be at 8 p.m. ET.
The Eagles also host Carver College Nov. 7 in Hanner Fieldhouse in an on-campus game as part of the tournament.
Georgia Southern reached 20 wins for the second time in four years in 2017-18 and joined Louisiana and UTA as the only three Sun Belt schools to reach double-digit conference wins in each of the last four seasons. The Eagles return three starters and five lettermen to the 2018-19 team.
