Kaylee Ramos hurls a four-hitter for her first career shutout, Shelby Wilson blasts a three-run home run to lead the Eagles on Sunday
STATESBORO, Ga. - Kaylee Ramos hurled a four-hitter for her first career shutout, and Shelby Wilson's three-run home run in the fifth inning was all the offense needed for Georgia Southern softball in a 3-0 Sun Belt Conference win over Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon, completing a series sweep of the Mountaineers at Eagle Field.
The Eagles (27-22, 11-13 SBC) also clinched a berth in the upcoming 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championship with the victory. Appalachian State falls to 16-33 overall and 3-18 in the Sun Belt with the loss. Georgia Southern will wrap up the 2018 regular season next weekend, traveling to Georgia State for a three-game Sun Belt series, beginning with a 6 p.m. single game on Friday, May 4th.
"This was an outstanding weekend," Georgia Southern Head Coach Kim Dean said. "I think we found ourselves again, and it's bigger than just wins. When you get late in the season, it's about your team believing in one another, fighting for one another. These were just three incredible team wins."
A scoreless contest between the two teams would change in the fifth as Wilson connected on a two-out, three-run home run to stake the Eagles to a 3-0 lead after five.
Ramos (5-4), who won both games of yesterday's doubleheader in relief, kept Appalachian State in check, throwing 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before the Mountaineers collected back-to-back hits in the sixth inning. Appalachian State would load the bases in the frame, but a strikeout and a fielder's choice would help her escape the threat.
In the seventh, a leadoff single from the Mountaineers would be all for Appalachian State as Ramos got Megan Walker to line out to short to complete the shutout, the first in her three seasons pitching for the Eagles. She finished the four-hitter by giving up just one walk, striking three, and hurling 101 pitches. Her counterpart, Kenzie Longanecker (7-18), gave up nine hits and three runs in six innings, striking out three for Appalachian State.
Ramos is the first Georgia Southern pitcher to win all three games of a weekend conference series since Brianna Streetmon beat Elon three times on May 1-2, 2010. The Sunday win was also the first in Sun Belt play for the Eagles this season in six tries.
"I'm extremely proud of Kaylee [Ramos], three wins in a weekend is huge," Coach Dean said. "We just kept pushing the envelope today, getting baserunners on, and we knew eventually we would score. I really like the way we are playing going into our last weekend of conference."
Wilson finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Eagles at the plate, while Hannah Farrell, Haley Carter and Logan Harrell also had a pair of hits apiece.
