The Eagles play their next three on the road.
STATESBORO – Carlisa May and Macey Putt combined for 20 kills with just five errors to lead Arkansas State to a 3-0 Sun Belt volleyball win over Georgia Southern Saturday evening in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Eagles of the Match
Carly Turner posted nine kills and a pair of digs while hitting .320 for the Eagles (8-19, 2-10).
Key Moment
The Eagles were ahead 16-9 in the second set, but Arkansas State (14-10, 6-5) responded with a 10-0 run. The Red Wolves wound up outscoring the Eagles 16-3 for the remainder of the set to open a 2-0 lead in the match. May had two kills during the stretch, and Madison Brown added two. The Eagles also committed six unforced hitting errors in the run.
Stat of the Match
The Eagles had 23 hitting errors in the match and hit .115, while Arkansas State had nine errors and hit .316.
Quotables from coach Dustin Wood
On the big run in the second set
"It was a combination of passing and some hitting errors so we couldn't get out of the rotation. Luckily, they missed a serve to get us out of it, but that can't happen in a match."
On the bright spots
"I think Carly (Turner) bounced back very well after not having her best game last night, so I was very proud of her. I thought Brooke Birch did a really good job serving and passing for us. Overall, I think we competed really hard tonight, but we have to learn how to play with a lead."
On the upcoming week
"The biggest thing this past week was about taking care of ourselves, and I think we did that. Now, it's about getting production all the way around and not from just one or two people. I thought Madison (Brown) did a pretty good job distributing the ball this weekend, and I think she learned a lot. Film and prep will help us, but at the end of the day it's executing on the court."
Next Up
The Eagles play three of their final four matches of the season on the road, starting with a Sun Belt contest at Coastal Carolina Friday at 6:30 p.m.
