QUICK HITS
- The Eagles look to close the four game homestand on a winning note on Tuesday night as Savannah State makes the trip up I-16 for the second time in series history. The Eagles downed the Tigers 16-1 last season in the first meeting between the programs.
- Georgia Southern battered ULM 9-0, narrowly missing out on the run-rule victory on getaway day. The Eagles posted six in the fifth to blow the game open as
Chase Cohen picked up his second win of the year.
- The Eagles took the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and Tigers 16-1 last season at the friendly confines. The Eagles out-hit SSU 16-5 with 15 of the hits going for a single.
Lawson Humphries went five to earn his first collegiate win on the bump.
- The Georgia Southern offense in 2017 has been buoyed by the bats of three freshman who have announced their presence with authority.Â
Steven Curry leads the team with a .351 average from the leadoff spot in the order. Curry enters the SSU game on a 15-game hit streak.
Mitchell Golden is hitting .343 between shortstop and third base.
Mason McWhorter is hitting .340 in 24 starts with eight doubles, and his first home run against College of Charleston.
- On March 1, 2016
Hunter Phillips was injured against the College of Charleston, forcing him to endure a year-long recovery. He made his return to game action 392 days later on March 28th at the College of Charleston.
- The Eagles defeated UT Arlington 9-5 on March 26th, scoring five in the first and four in the eighth. The impressive stat lying underneath that line is that all nine Georgia Southern runs came with two outs in the respective innings. The Eagles posted four-straight two out hits in both innings. In the eighth inning of the tie game, the Eagles broke Maverick hearts with a single, a triple, a double and a triple in succession to take the win.
- In the win over College of Charleston, the Eagles "broke" the new manual scoreboard by tallying 19 hits (two more than the scoreboard had numbers for). Since then, Georgia Southern's partner Whitfield Signs created additional signs before the South Alabama series, allowing a maximum of 21 hits or runs to be displayed on the scoreboard.
- The 2017 Sun Belt Tournament is coming to Statesboro starting on May 23, 2017. The new format features two play in games that pit the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds and the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds for the final spots in the field of eight.
