STATESBORO -
Shai Werts ran for nearly 100 yards and a score as the Georgia Southern football squad held its annual Blue-White Spring Game Saturday at Paulson Stadium. Under cloudless skies and 75-degree weather, the Eagles went through a 100-play scrimmage to highlight a day of activities at the Erk Russell Athletic Park.

With the offense running in the blue and defense in white, the two sides went toe to toe for almost two hours. Quarterback LaBaron Anthony opened the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown run on the second drive of the day before running back Wesley Fields punched it in from 4 yards outs.

Demarcus Godfrey scored from 14 yards out and Werts added a 16-yard rushing score late. On the final play of the game, Seth Shuman connected with Hampton McConnell on a short passing touchdown.

Traver Vliem and Randy Wade Jr. both had a fumble recovery and the defense recorded three pass break ups and two sacks.

Offensively, the Eagles ran for 371 yards and four scores in Bryan Cook's new offense while also throwing for 98 yards and a touchdown. Werts led the way with 98 yards on the ground while Godfrey (54 yards), Mario Cherry (41 yards), LaBaron Anthony (36 yards), Myles Campbell (30 yards) and Wesley Fields (28 yards) had good days running the ball. Ross Alexander had a 49-yard grab and Shuman threw for 58 yards and a score.

"I saw a lot of good things out there today and we'll back and look at the video to try and get better," said head coach Tyson Summers. "A lot of evaluation will go into today's scrimmage from an individual standpoint and what we're doing offensively and defensively. We'll use these final six practices to continue to install the offense and try and perfect things before we break.

"We were able to go through 100 plays with no significant injuries, and that's always the number one goal," he continued. "I'm really excited about where we're headed and we have to continue to build on what we've done so far."

The Eagles will return to the practice field on Tuesday morning and are scheduled to practice six more times before breaking until preseason camp, which begins July 31.
