QUICK HITS
- The Eagles trail in the all-time series with Elon 23-19 with all 42 previous contest coming in the
Rodney Hennon Era. The Eagles are 11-7 in Alamance County, dropping two of three against the Phoenix the last time they played in March 2014.
- The Georgia Southern offense in 2017 has been buoyed by the bats of three freshman who have announced their presence with authority.
Mason McWhorter is hitting .444 in nine starts with four doubles.
Mitchell Golden is hitting .382 between shortstop and third base while
Steven Curry is hitting .321 at second base.
-
Ryan Cleveland got off to a hot start in the 2017 season, winning Sun Belt Player of the Week, but there was one notable absence, the long ball. Cleveland has changed that in spades, clubbing five home runs through 13 games including four-straight games with a home run entering the Elon series.
- Freshman
Seth Shuman picked up his first pitching victory with five innings of two-hit shutout ball against College of Charleston. He backed that up with five innings of three hit ball against Campbell to improve to 2-0 on the year. The righty is the most experienced returning quarterback for the Eagles football team and was a 39th round pick by Baltimore in the 2016 draft. Eagle football opened spring practice on March 9th.
- In the win over College of Charleston, the Eagles "broke" the new manual scoreboard by tallying 19 hits (two more than the scoreboard had numbers for), but the big number was six. The Eagles posted six runs in the first inning, batting around for the first time this season and recording their first runs in the opening frame this year.
- Georgia Southern was picked third in the newly formed East Division in the league's annual preseason poll. The Eagles were selected behind Coastal Carolina and South Alabama, but garnered a first place vote. Louisiana was picked first in the West Division.
COMING UP NEXT
The Eagles open league play at home next weekend with a series against South Alabama. The Eagles took two of three in the regular season last year and defeated the Jaguars in the Sun Belt Tournament to clinch a spot in the Championship Game.
