South Alabama Takes Sunday's Finale Over the Eagles, 5-0

Chase Cohen fans a career-high nine batters, but takes his second loss of 2017

STATESBORO, GA. - Georgia Southern Baseball dropped the final game of this weekend's series to South Alabama, 5-0, to close the opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play. The Eagles out-hit the Jaguars 8-6, but struck out 13 times on Sunday. Next up for Georgia Southern is a pair of midweek games against The Citadel, starting with Tuesday's game at Riley Park in Charleston.

The Eagles fall to 10-9 on the season and 1-2 in Sun Belt play. South Alabama improves to 11-9 and 2-1 in the league.

CRUICIAL MOMENTS
Top 2nd - USA 2 - GS 0
- South Alabama got its first runs of the game in the second with a tow run home run to left.
Top 5th - USA 3 - GS 0 - A double with one out by Brendan Donovan, followed by two wild pitches brought in the Jags' third run of the day.
Top 7th - USA 4 - GS 0 - Two walks and a hit loaded the bases for cleanup hitter Wells Davis. He lofted a sacrifice fly to left, pushing Hunter Stokes in to extend the lead to 4-0.
Top 8th - USA 5 - GS 0 - With a hit and two outs against the Jags in the eighth, three-straight walks pushed in South Alabama's fifth run of the game.

GAME NOTES
- Sophomore Chase Cohen went four and a third innings, scattering three hits and allowing three runs. He fanned a career-high nine batters in the series finale, besting his previous high by two. He was handed his second loss of the season, falling to 1-2 on the year.
- Freshman Cameron Hankins picked up his first collegiate hit on Sunday, entering as a pinch hitter in the seventh. He advanced Wren to third in the seventh with a single up the middle and gave the Eagles a two-out single in the ninth to extend the game.

NEXT UP
The Eagles have a pair of games slated for this week against The Citadel. The week starts on Tuesday night with a trip to Charleston and Joe C. Riley Park at 6 p.m. The same two teams are back at it on Wednesday night in Statesboro. Next weekend the Eagles visit UT Arlington, traveling to the Metroplex for the second-straight year.
