QUICK HITS
- English rocker Ian Hunter said it first in 1979, but we reiterate the sentiment now after
Ryan Cleveland's rocking start to the 2017 season. The senior first baseman hit .556 in the Middle Tennessee series to kick start his campaign. After taking four walks in the opener, Cleveland slashed a double to right in the ninth inning of game two that scored three runs and tied the game at 6-6. He recorded a double in each game of the series and is slugging .889 on the year with seven RBIs.
- Georgia Southern trails the Yellow Jackets 31-98 in the all-time series including five-straight losses to the "other" team from Atlanta. The Eagles had a chance to defeat Tech last year in Statesboro, but a two-out error in the ninth allowed Tech to even the game, which went 16 innings and resulted in a 6-5 loss.
- Two Eagles were selected to the All-Sun Belt Preseason Poll with
Ryan Cleveland and
Evan Challenger earning spots on the team.
- The Eagles were picked third in the new East Division of the Sun Belt Conference which features defending National Champion Coastal Carolina, NCAA Tournament entrant South Alabama, Georgia State, Appalachian State and Troy. The Eagles earned a first place vote in the poll of the league's coaches.
- The Road to Omaha for 2017 leads through Statesboro with the Sun Belt Championships coming to Jack Stallings Field at J.I. Clements Stadium in May. The league's top teams will decide the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the hallowed home of the Eagles.
- The Eagles have 11 seniors on this year's squad while returning seven of the eight position starters from 2016. The sharp end of the pitching staff is still intact with all three weekend starters from last year back for 2017.
