STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Orangeburg, S.C., for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference matchup at South Carolina State.
The Eagles (1-3) are coming off of a tough 84-36 loss to SEC to Alabama, while South Carolina State (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Winthrop by a 65-37 score. Georgia Southern is 6-1 all-time against the Bulldogs, which included a 74-58 win by the Eagles in Statesboro last season, and Tuesday's trip will be the first visit to Orangeburg since 2002.
"They got their first win the other night with a nice road win at Winthrop," Head Coach Kip Drown said about the Bulldogs. "Compared to Alabama, the size factor will not be what it was in that game. They basically play four guards, and their top two scorers come off the bench, which is unusual.Â
I think, looking at film, it looks like their strengths are their athleticism, being able to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. They bring back 4-5 kids that played against us last year. Their defensive pressure can get out and create some problems, you have keep them in front of you on the dribble, I think that's number one concern."
The Eagles have had offensive difficulties to open the 2017-18 season, not scoring more than 50 points in three of the four games this season. After setting a school record with 220 three-pointers last season (7.3 per game), the Eagles are averaging two less per game this year (5.3) and shooting just 29 percent from beyond the arc. Despite the early struggles, Coach Drown believes his team will continue to progress, starting Tuesday night.
"We're 1-3, and we've just gone through a stretch against better teams we'll play all year in Mercer and Alabama," Coach Drown said. "We did not play real well in those games, but they've taught us some things. I told our team, 'Let's go over there and be focused.' We get to come back home next week for two games, one on Monday, and one on Wednesday. If we can get one tomorrow night, then get those two next week, you look up and you're going into finals at 4-3."
