It was Senior Day for the Eagles, and the victory ended a nine-game losing streak. It was also the first time GS has shut out an FBS opponent.
The story
The Eagles got off to a great start when Werts hit
Malik Henry for a 51-yard completion down to the South Alabama 4-yard line on their first drive. Ramsby punched it in two plays later,
Tyler Bass added the extra point and Georgia Southern led 7-0.
Ramsby put the Eagles ahead 14-0 just shy of eight minutes into the contest with an 8-yard run.
Deshon Cooper set up the score by scooping up a Jaguar fumble at the USA 20-yard line and scampering down to the 8.
The Eagle defense got off the field quickly with help of
Kindle Vildor's first career sack on a corner blitz. Georgia Southern promptly marched 94 yards in eight plays for its third touchdown of the game. Brown connected with Richardson for a 48-yard pass, and Fields capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run and a 21-0 cushion.
Werts capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown to increase the margin to 28-0 early in the second quarter. Brown started the drive with a 13-yard run, and Werts connected with Anderson on a 27-yard pass play to move the ball to the USA 19-yard line.
A 16-yard run by
Monteo Garrett and a 20 yard pass from Werts to Richardson helped set up a 41-yard field goal by Bass. The junior booted it through as the gun to end the first half sounded, and the Eagles led 31-0 at the break.
GS outgained South Alabama 225-31 in total yards in the first quarter and 361-72 in the first half.Â
The Eagle defense kept rolling in the second frame, forcing a 3-and-out on South Alabama's first possession of the second half. Werts hit Henry with an 8-yard touchdown pass on 4th down to increase the margin to 38-0, and the rout was on. Werts helped set up the score with a 40-yard run.Â
The Georgia Southern offense had five drives of 80-plus yards in the contest.
Quotables
Sophomore corner Kindle Vildor
"Coach Zo kept telling us this was the week we were going to put it all together, and we did. We had a good week of practice, and today was just another work day. We had to send our seniors out with a good taste in their mouth."
Senior running back L.A. Ramsby
"It means everything to me. I have scored a lot of touchdowns and run for a lot of yards here, but this goes down as one of my favorite memories."Â
"Over the last couple of weeks, we've made some changes, and we've been working hard and coming out and playing hard. Today just showed that it's all paying off."
