Eagles now begin individual workouts leading up to the 2018 season, which begins in February
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball squad wrapped up its Fall competition last week, and Head Coach Kim Dean is encouraged with her team's performance as they now start the hard work leading up to its Spring season, which begins in February.
The Eagles competed against East Georgia and the University of Georgia, capping off 10 games of its Fall season against a variety of competitive squads from around the Southeast. Coach Dean is particularly pleased with what she's seen from her squad over the slate.
"I think, from our first time out on the field against an opponent to wrapping up this past Sunday, we've made some good improvements," Coach Dean said. "I think our communication is getting a lot better. Game speed decision making has improved defensively, and I think our pitching staff has started really commanding the zone a little bit better, getting us groundball outs and strikeouts when we've needed them.
"Hitting-wise, I think we are getting a little bit better at striving to hit a particular side of the plate or pitch," Coach Dean said. "I think we have a better idea of what we are trying to accomplish throughout our lineup. Baserunning has become a lot better and I just think our overall chemistry is starting to improve. I'm really looking forward to taking care of us and continuing to develop the fundamentals."
With the Fall competition schedule over, however, that does not mean that work for the Eagles stops. Coach Dean outlines what the next couple of months will look like for the softball team.
"We'll go back to individual work, with very small groups that are also very tailored groups," Coach Dean said. "We'll be working on the true specific details of the game, with each player's position, where they hit in the lineup. It will be very specialized work. We're also going to get back to building in the weight room, getting some conditioning going and working on the unique skill set of each individual over the next two months."
The Eagles are still finalizing their Spring schedule but will open up the year on February 9-11, hosting the 2018 Eagle Round Robin, which will feature Murray State, Austin Peay, Radford, East Tennessee State and Georgia Southern.
