The Eagles host Hoops Fan Fest Wednesday in Hanner Fieldhouse.
STATESBORO – Georgia Southern juniors Ike Smith and Tookie Brown, the top two returning scorers in the Sun Belt, have been named preseason all-conference by online publication College Sports Madness.
The duo both earned first-team all-conference in a vote by the league's coaches last season.
Smith ranked first in the Sun Belt in scoring (19.6 ppg) and field goals made (230), second in free throws made (127) and fifth in field goal percentage (.498). He led the Eagles in scoring in 17 games and scored over 20 points 19 times. He was named Sun Belt Player of the Week Jan. 24 and finished the campaign just two points shy of reaching the 1,000-point milestone for his career.
Brown tied for second in the Sun Belt in scoring (17.1 ppg) and ranked first in free throws made (148), sixth in steals (1.4/gm) and fourth in assists (4.0/gm). He scored 20-plus points in six straight games from Dec. 15-Jan. 9 and scored 20-plus points 14 times this season and 30-plus twice. Brown led the Eagles in scoring 12 times and was named Sun Belt Player of the Week Jan. 3. He became the first sophomore in school history to go over 1,000 points for his career after netting 32 at Appalachian State Feb. 13.
The Eagles have been one of the youngest teams in the country the last two years, and for the second year in a row, Georgia Southern returns 94 percent of its scoring and all five starters. A number of college basketball publications are predicting Georgia Southern to be one of the top teams in the conference.
Fans will have the chance to meet student-athletes and coaches from the men's and women's basketball teams at Hoops Fan Fest Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. Admission and parking is free, and free t-shirts will be given to early-arriving fans while supplies last. Concessions will be open and giving away free popcorn while supplies last, and drinks will be available for purchase.
The men's team will start things off with a scrimmage, and the women's team will follow with a scrimmage. Both teams will be introduced, and there will be a 3-point shooting contest. Inflatables and autograph sessions with both squads will be on the floor following the 3-point contest.
Fans will be able to pick up 2017-18 schedule posters and schedule cards as well as purchase season tickets.
