Georgia Southern and Appalachian State's rivalry dates back to 1990. Since then, the two teams have met on the hardwood 56 total times. Georgia Southern owns a 36-20 winning record over the Mountaineers, and the two teams split their Sun Belt contests last season. The Eagles fell at home, losing 62-68, but defeated the Mountaineers on the road, 65-50.
Angel Elderkin is in her third season at the helm of the Mountaineer's program after previously coaching at LSU. Elderkin led the Apps to a 14-16 record and a 9-11 mark in her inaugural season, and last year the team finished with a 10-20 record, 7-13 in conference play. Despite the record last season, the Mountaineers had wins against squads such as UL Lafayette, who was second in the conference at the moment, and eventual Sun Belt Tournament Champion Troy.
This year, Appalachian State has started the campaign 8-9 overall, 2-3 in the Sun Belt with conference wins over Arkansas State, Georgia State and Texas State. The Mountaineers are averaging 64.4 points per game, but give up a total of 66.9 points on average. As a team, Appalachian State enters Saturday's game shooting 38.4% (402-1047) from the field and are averaging 3.1 three-pointers per contest. The Mountaineers have forced 17.9 turnovers per game, but have also turned the ball over 18.1 times per game themselves.
Appalachian State is led in scoring by Joi Jones, who averages 14.2 points per game, and Madi Story with 11.8. Jones, a senior guard from Duluth, Ga., had a total of 242 points this year and has started every game for the Mountaineers. Junior guard Madi Story has tallied 200 herself, and also leads the team in steals, with 22. Redshirt sophomore Q Murray proves to be the Mountaineers most dangerous three-point shooter, with a 30.3% average (20-66) and 1.2 per game. Carter Bria leads App from down low, with 102 total rebounds and a 46.9% (45-96) average from field goal range.
