MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Ansley Bowman fired a school record 69 in the second round, and
Yeji Shin shot a 70 in the third to lead the Georgia Southern women's golf team to a second-place finish in the CSU Fall Invitational Tuesday at Rivertowne Country Club.
The tournament came down to the wire, and the counters from College of Charleston (+5) all parred their last two holes of the day to claim a two-stroke victory over the Eagles.
Yeji Shin (-1) and
Iben Hvass each tied for third, two strokes behind medalist Laura Fuenfstueck of College of Charleston. Georgia Southern's
Lauren Coe (+6) tied for 13th, and
Julianna Collett (+9), who played as an individual this week, tied for 18th.
The second-place team finish and third-place individual finishes are the best in the brief history of the program, which is in its second season. The Eagles led the tournament with 37 birdies and ranked second in pars with 176. Hvass led the Eagles with a 70-73=143 today, while Shin carded a 74-70=144.
A three-hour lightening delay caused a suspension of yesterday's second round so the teams had between 3-6 holes to finish this morning before playing the third round. The Eagles began the third round with a slim three-stroke advantage.
The story – Rd. 3
Shin posted consecutive birdies on holes 6-8 and ran off 11 straight pars to finish the round and card a career-low 70. After a tough start on her first hole, Coe played her next 14 holes 3-under-par on her way to a 73, and Hvass logged 17 pars and a bogey to shoot 73.
Ariana Macioce had 10 straight pars during her round, and Bowman began the round with six straight pars. Collett had two of her three birdies on the final seven holes of the day to shoot a 72.
The story - Rd. 2
Bowman birdied the first three holes of the round and was 4-under-par through 15 holes on her way to a career-low 69. Hvass was 3-under on the front 9, parred the first four holes of the back 9 and made a birdie on her last hole for a career-best 70. Shin birdied four of her first 11 holes and finished with four straight pars, and Coe played her first eight holes 2-under par.
Quotable from coach Emily Kuhfeld
"The girls really bought in to what we have been working on this season. We had a good plan of where we wanted the ball to end up on each hole and then it was a matter of putting a good roll on our putts. The way we attacked the course set us up for good scores, and we did a great job of sticking with the plan, which was one of our goals."
"Being in contention for the first time as a team was a really wonderful learning experience to have at the beginning of the season and will end up helping us down the road. The lessons we learned will help us be able to finish it off the next time we're in that situation."
