Eagles Fall to Texas State in Series Finale, 4-3

The Bobcats sweep the series over Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Baseball scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 3-1 lead over Texas State, but a three-run ninth allowed the Bobcats to sweep the series on Sunday. The Eagles will travel to Charleston, SC to play College of Charleston Tuesday at 6 p.m. before beginning a four-game homestand on Wednesday night against Savannah State.

QUOTABLES
HEAD COACH RODNEY HENNON
"We have to step up and make plays. Right now when something negative happens, we let that snowball on us a little bit. We have to be tougher mentally and tougher-minded and be able to step up and make a play. We're not asking them to be spectacular, we just need them to step up and do the routine things, not just defensively but there are some things offensively at times where we could do better. Bottom line is we have to be a mentally tougher baseball team. We've dug ourselves into a hole (in conference play) and we just have to fight our way out of it."

CRUCIAL MOMENTS
TOP 3rd – Starting pitcher Brian Eichhorn hit the leadoff batter in the third, only to be followed by a double and an RBI single to give Texas State a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats loaded the bases later in the frame, but Eichhorn worked out of the jam and retired the next eight batters in order to keep the lead to just one.
BOTTOM 7th – Georgia Southern's bats came alive in the seventh as the Eagles got on the scoreboard. Two singles and an error on CJ Ballard's sacrifice bunt attempt loaded the bases. Logan Baldwin scored first as he scampered home on a wild pitch with no outs in the frame. Later in the inning with one out, pinch hitter Drew Kelley hit a sac fly to left to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
BOTTOM 8th – Will Hudgins opened the eighth with a leadoff double and moved to third on a wild pitch. A single up the middle by Cal Baker sent Hudgins home for a little bit of insurance, extending the lead to 3-1.
TOP 9th – A leadoff walk and a single through the left side brought the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed one run to score while an infield ground ball with runners at second and third tied the game at 3-3. A sacrifice fly gave the Bobcats a decisive 4-3 lead as three runs, one earned scored in the ninth.

NOTES
-  Georgia Southern dropped its first series sweep since dropping all three to South Alabama last year.
- Adam Kelly entered the ninth in line for his first collegiate win, but gave up three runs in the frame to take his first loss of the year.
- Sunday's game was the Eagles annual Vs. Cancer Game to benefit the Vs. Cancer Foundation. The Eagles raised more than $11,000 to benefit the foundation which helps fight cancer in children. After the game the team and members of the support staff shaved their heads to show their solidarity with those fighting cancer.

NEXT GAME
The Eagles face College of Charleston Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in Charleston, SC. The Eagles will head back to familiar territory to open a four-game homestand on Wednesday against Savannah State.
