Softball heads to event at Coastal Carolina
ON THE DIAMOND
The Georgia Southern softball team travels to Conway, South Carolina, to participate in the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Eagles open the event on Friday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against Iowa. On Saturday, GS takes on Coastal at 1:30 p.m., and then Iowa again at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Eagles wrap up the weekend with a single game against CCU at noon.

YEAR NO. 5
Georgia Southern head coach Annie Smith is in her fifth season at the helm of the Eagles. Her tenure in Statesboro has taken the Eagles to new heights with two SoCon Regular Season Championships and two SoCon Tournament Championships as well as overseeing the transition to the Sun Belt Conference in Smith's four previous seasons. During her tenure, Smith has advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice (2012 and 2013) as the Eagles have quickly made a name for themselves within the regional and national landscape.
Smith has an overall career record of 127-115. In 2014, she became the fastest coach in Georgia Southern history to reach 100 career wins when her team posted a 4-0 victory over Appalachian State on April 5.
Smith joined Georgia Southern with 16 years of experience as a collegiate assistant coach, serving at Missouri for six seasons before heading to Mississippi State for nine years, handling all aspects of the program. In 2006, Smith was promoted to associate head coach of the Bulldogs.
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA
Coastal Carolina is 4-7 on the season after dropping a tight ballgame at South Carolina on Tuesday. Taty Forbes is off to a hot start at the plate, hitting .525 with four stolen bases. Kelsey Dominik is second on the team, hitting .364 with three home runs for an offense that is hitting .292 with 11 home runs, eight doubles and 12 stolen bases in as many tries.
Dominik has been the workhorse in the circle early on, throwing 52.1 innings. She is 3-5 with a 3.08 ERA and 47 strikeouts. Ashley Guilette is 1-2 with a 8.22 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched with 24 strikeouts.
The Eagles and CCU have met 17 previous times with the Chanticleers holding a slim 9-8 advantage in the series. The last time the two met was in 2014 when they split a pair of games in Gainesville, Florida.

SCOUTING IOWA
Iowa is 3-7 on the young season after dropping four of five contests in Rosemont, Illinois, last weekend. The Hawkeyes are hitting. 216 as a team with two home runs, five doubles and 15 stolen bases. Claire Fritsch leads the regulars in hitting, putting up a .276 average while Katy Taylor is hitting .275.
Elizabeth Wiegand has started five games thus far and is 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. Mallory Kilian (1-1, 2.77 ERA) and Erin Riding (0-4, 3.86) have also gotten starts.
The Eagles and Hawkeyes have met five previous times with Iowa winning all five contests. The last time the two met was in 2005.
