2017 Georgia Southern Softball Schedule
STATESBORO – The 2017 Georgia Southern softball schedule has been released. The slate of 52 games features 27 home contests, including the hosting of two tournaments, and features marquee games against five Southeastern Conference foes.
"It is always exciting for the challenge that a new season presents," head coach Annie Smith said. "We have a tough non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the battle in the Sun Belt. The two home tournaments will offer our fans, who support us so well, more opportunities to see the Eagles in action. We are excited to get the year going and to open the season at home in February."
Georgia Southern plays 19 teams that finished the 2016 campaign with at least 30 wins, including six teams that collected 40 wins and two that ended the year with at least 50 wins. Also included in the 2017 schedule are eight teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament and three Women's College World Series (WCWS) participants.
The season begins with four tournaments, including two at home. The Eagles will commence the season at home with the Eagle Round Robin Tournament, featuring UNC Greensboro, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee and Tennessee Tech. GS will play UNCG and MTSU on Feb. 10, UT and TTU on Feb. 11 and close out the tourney against the Blue Raiders of MTSU on Feb. 12. The Volunteers of UT finished the 2016 campaign with a 43-16 record and advanced to an NCAA Regional.
Georgia Southern will then hit the road for the first time with back-to-back tournaments in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Kissimmee, Florida. The Eagles will first trek to Baton Rouge to participate in LSU's Purple & Gold Challenge. The Eagles will play the Bayou Bengals twice as well as Central Arkansas twice. Last season, LSU advanced to the WCWS, falling in the semifinal round to eventual national champion Oklahoma.
Following LSU's tournament, GS will close out the first month of the season by participating in the Citrus Classic I at Walt Disney World, Feb. 24-26. The Eagles will play Elon, Morgan State, Ball State, Lehigh and Fordham over three days. Both Lehigh and Fordham ended last year with more than 30 wins and the Rams of Fordham participated in the Eugene (Ore.) Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The first weekend of March (March 3-5) will see the Eagles return home for their final tournament, their own Eagle Classic. The tourney will also feature Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, South Carolina State, Delware State and Presbyterian. Eastern Kentucky returns to Statesboro for the third year in a row. EKU, Marshall and Delaware State all finished last season with over 30 wins on the year.
Georgia Southern will next travel the short distance down I-16 to Savannah for a single game against Savannah State on March 8. The game against the Tigers will serve as the first portion of a home-and-home series with SSU traveling to Statesboro on April 26 for a single game.
The Eagles will open Sun Belt Conference play at home with a three-game series against Troy, March 11-12. Last season, Georgia Southern was one of just two programs in the league to defeat every conference team they played at least once, joining Louisiana in the distinction. GS and Troy will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11 and close out the series with a single game on Sunday, March 12.
Following the Sun Belt Conference opener, Georgia Southern will dip back out of conference play and travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where perennial national power and 2012 national champion Alabama awaits for a single game on March 15. The trip, which will be during the Eagles' Spring Break, will also see GS travel to Monroe, Louisiana, for the second year in a row to take on the Warhawks of ULM for a three-game league series. The Eagles and Warhawks will tangle in a single game on March 17 and close out the series with a twinbill on March 18.
After the four-game Spring Break trip, the Eagles will return home for a non-conference game against the Cougars of College of Charleston on March 22 before hitting the road for four more games, including a three-game series at UTA. The Mavericks and Eagles will play in Arlington, Texas, beginning with a doubleheader on March 25 and ending with a single game on March 26. Georgia Southern will close out the road swing with the annual trip to Athens for a single game against the Bulldogs of Georgia on March 29.
The Eagles will begin the month of April with a pair of home Sun Belt Conference series and a single non-conference game on the road sandwiched in between. Louisiana will first travel to Statesboro for the second year in a row April 1-2. The Eagles and Ragin' Cajuns will play a twinbill on April 1 and close out the series with a single game on April 2. Following a quick, midweek trip to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the Gamecocks of South Carolina on April 5, the Eagles will host league newcomer Coastal Carolina. GS and CCU will play the doubleheader of the three-game series on April 8 and will play a single game on April 9. Last season, Georgia Southern defeated South Carolina in Columbia on the SEC Network+ and took down No. 8 Louisiana 2-0 on Senior Day. The 2-0 win by Georgia Southern over the Ragin' Cajuns was one of just three times during 2016 that Louisiana was shut out.
Following the home series with Coastal Carolina, the Eagles will travel to Boone, North Carolina, for a three-game series with long-time rival Appalachian State before heading to Atlanta for a mid-week game at Georgia Tech. The Eagles and Mountaineers will play a single game on April 14 and a doubleheader on April 15. The matchup between GS and Georgia Tech will be April 19.
Georgia Southern will return home following the game in Atlanta for a four-game homestand against Texas State and Savannah State. The Bobcats and Eagles will play a twinbill on April 22 and close out the series with a single game on April 23.
The final road trip of 2017 will see the Eagles travel to Mobile, Alabama, to take on South Alabama April 29-30. The two teams will play the doubleheader of the three-game series on April 29 with the single game coming on April 30.
Georgia Southern will close out the regular-season against rival Georgia State. The Eagles and Panthers, playing for one point in the Georgia Southern – Georgia State Rivalry Series, will tangle in a single game on May 5 and will turn around and play a doubleheader on May 6.
This season, the Sun Belt Conference Championship will be hosted by Troy in Troy, Alabama. The tournament will be contested May 10-13.
The 2016 team wrapped up the season with a return trip to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and saw an 18-game improvement from the previous year, ranking as one of the best marks in the country. The 2016 Eagles finished the year with a 30-27 record, including 13-11 in conference play, and made plenty of strides on the softball field.
The 2016 team played a tough schedule that included four Southeastern Conference opponents and five games featured on the SEC Network+. The Eagles also participated in five regular-season tournaments, including winning all four games of their own Eagle Classic. Throughout the season, GS played 10 teams currently ranked inside the top-75 of the RPI, including four inside the top-25, and played three teams that were nationally ranked at the time. The Eagles also played six teams that earned berths into the NCAA tournament and beat four of those teams, including earning three of those wins on the road as well as a win over Louisiana which is headed to the NCAA Super Regional Round.
