Gameday GuideSTATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern will honor former men's basketball coach Frank Kerns at its basketball doubleheader against ULM Jan. 16 in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Kerns, who passed away last Aug. 3 at the age of 82, will be honored prior to the tipoff of the men's game at 5 p.m. His wife, Susan, will be part of the pregame ceremony.Â
The four-time Trans America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year led the Eagles to five postseason appearances – three in the NCAA Tournament (1983, 1987, 1992) and two in the NIT (1988, 1989). His teams won four TAAC regular-season conference championships, and he posted a 244-132 record in 13 seasons from 1981-1994.
Kerns' winning percentage of .650 is the best among Eagle coaches in the Division I era. He coached Jeff Sanders and Michael Curry, both of whom have their jerseys hanging in the rafters of Hanner Fieldhouse. Kerns also served as the color analyst for men's basketball games on the Georgia Southern Radio Network for eight seasons.
The pre-game ceremony is just one of a host of activities scheduled for the day.Â
Georgia Southern will honor the school's first bowl championship football team at halftime of the men's game. The Eagles won the GoDaddy Bowl 58-27 over Bowling Green Dec. 23. The GoDaddy Bowl Championship Trophy will be on display during the women's game and through the first half of the men's contest.It's also men's basketball Alumni Day, and Georgia Southern will acknowledge alumni in attendance. Finally, there will be a Teddy Bear Toss, and all teddy bears thrown onto the floor will be donated to a local children's hospital.
