HOME BASKETBALL PROMOTIONS• Thursday's games against UL Lafayette is being dubbed "Meet Coach Summers Night" as newly announced head football coach
Tyson Summers will be in attendance to meet with fans and boosters during both games.
• Thursday's doubleheader is also being tabbed as a Blue Out with fans encouraged to wear blue and pack Hanner.
• Finally, Thursday's game is the Semester Tip-off with lots of free t-shirts, giveaways and prizes planned for the student section during both games.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME• The Eagles are wrapping up a four-game Sun Belt Conference homestand before hitting the road for their final long road trek.
• The Eagles have one more long homestand coming in February when they host the schools from Arkansas as well as Appalachian State and rival Georgia State.
• So far this season the Eagles are 3-3 at home with wins over Jacksonville State, Charleston Southern and South Alabama.
QUICK HITTERS• Georgia Southern enters this week in a three-way tie for eighth in the Sun Belt Conference standings. The Eagles are 1-3 in league action as are South Alabama and rival Georgia State. GSU boasts a win over USA but has not yet played State while the Jaguars secured a win over the Panthers. Just ahead of the three-way tie for eighth, Appalachian State and UA-Little Rock are tied for sixth with similar 2-2 records.
• Statistically speaking, GSU is third in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage (.709) and three-point field goals made (6.5/game), fourth in defensive rebounds (25.2/game) and fifth in field goal percentage defense (.388), three-point field goal percentage defense (.304) and sixth in rebounding defense (38.6).
• Juniors
Angel McGowan and
Patrice Butler are both currently in the top-15 in the conference in scoring. McGowan enters the week averaging 15.3 points per outing, good enoguh for sixth in the league while Butler is tied for 12th with 12.4 points per outing.
• McGowan is fifth in steals (2.3/game) and three-point field goals made (1.9/game) and she also is 12th in both field goal percentage (.461) and three-point field goal percentage (.348) while
Alexis Sams leads the conference with an average of 35.8 minutes per contest and is tied for 11th in assists with 2.5 per game. P. Butler is seventh in free throw percentage (.771)
• Senior
Briana Jones is currently six points away from 500 career points, all at Georgia Southern. For her career, she averages 7.2 points per game and has 25 so far this season.
• P. Butler entered last week just four points shy of eclipsing the 600 point total for her collegiate career. As a freshman at Furman, she scored 131 points and has 465 at Georgia Southern to date. She surpassed the 600 point total in the Eagles' 57-43 win over South Alabama. She currently has 622 total points, including 491 at Georgia Southern.
• In Thursday's win over South Alabama, McGowan recorded seven steals which was not just a career-high for the Greenville, S.C. native, it also matched the fifth-most steals in a single game by an Eagle player. Her 117 career steals has her just 17 shy of 20th all-time in program history.
NATIONAL EXPOSURE• By the end of the season, the Eagles will have played 10 games on the ESPN family of Networks.
• Eight Sun Belt Conference contests, including the next four, will be broadcast live on ESPN3 beginning with the Eagles' home contests against UL Lafayette and UL Monroe.
• The Nov. 24, 2015 game at Georgia was broadcasted on the SEC Network + and when GS played Stetson on Dec. 20 as part of the Hatter Classic, the game aired on ESPN3.
THE HISTORY WITH UL LAFAYETTE• Thursday's game against UL Lafayette will be just the third meeting between the two programs. The Ragin' Cajuns won both previous meetings last season to hold a 2-0 record over the Eagles.
• Last season in Statesboro, the Cajuns won 69-57 on January 15 in the first-ever meeting between the two.
SCOUTING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS• The Ragin' Cajuns (10-3, 3-1 SBC), coming off their first conference loss of the season, an 83-56 setback at Arkansas State last Saturday after winning three-straight, are currently tied for second in the league standings with Troy.
• Out of conference, the Cajuns boast a pair of wins at Mississippi (82-78) and in a neutral contest against Arkansas (67-59) while two of their three losses on the season came at Houston (52-51) and at Louisiana Tech (79-62). On the road, the Cajuns are 3-3 in true road games but 2-0 in neutral contests.
• As a team, ULL averages 67.2 points per outing while shooting 41.5% from the field and has held opponents to 56.7 points. They are also forcing 21.9 turnovers per game while only committing 14.0 of their own.
• Individually, Keke Veal leads the way in scoring with 16.6 points per game, good enough for third in the league, and also boasts a team-best 27 steals. She shoots 39.0% from the field and is second on the team with 15 three-pointers behind Jaylen Gordon's 29 treys. Gordon is second on the team with 13.7 points per game, good enough for eighth in the conference, but leads the team with 3.5 assists per game.
• Kia Wilridge is the third and final member of the Ragin' Cajuns' squad to average double-digit points with 12.5 per contest, 11th-best in the SBC. She leads the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.
NEXT UP• Georgia Southern will wrap up their four-game homestand by hosting UL Monroe on Saturday, Jan. 16 for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
