GREENVILLE, S.C. – It goes without saying that in a first-year program with six student-athletes on the roster, including four freshmen, there are going to be some bumps in the road. After putting themselves within striking distance of a top-10 finish Sunday, the Eagles hit a bump Monday in the second round of the Lady Paladin Invitational at Furman Golf Club and fell back to 16th.
Georgia Southern (+54), which is playing the first tournament in program history, is seven strokes behind Samford (+47) and nine behind 13th-place Wofford (+45). Wake Forest (+4) moved into the lead, followed by Missouri (+5) and Clemson (+8).
Ariana Macioce led the Eagles with a 77 today, and Yeji Shin posted a 79. Iben Hvass, who fired a 71 yesterday, finished with an 81 today, and Annie Swords shot an 87. Taylor Thompson finished with an 89.
The storyline
The Eagles teed off on hole 10, and Shin got off to a good start as three birdies on her first nine holes had the freshman even at the turn. Macioce finished strong and played her final nine holes at 1-over with a birdie on hole 4. Hvass was also solid on her final nine holes with a birdie on the par-4 5th hole, and the junior played the front nine of the course at 3-over.
Quotable from Coach Emily Kuhfeld
"I am proud of the team for giving great effort today even though some things didn't go our way. We are looking forward to attacking tomorrow's round with energy and focus."
Next Up
Georgia Southern plays the third and final round tomorrow in a shotgun start. The Eagles tee off at 9 a.m.
