The Eagles open Sun Belt play against defending champion Little Rock Friday

STATESBORO, Ga. – Stephanie Spencer recorded a match-high 12 kills to go along with 11 digs, and Georgia Southern hit .302 as a team to earn a 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-14) volleyball victory over Savannah State Tuesday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.

Spencer hit .333 to lead the Eagles (5-6), and Megan Chevalier finished with nine kills. Crysten Curry chipped in five kills, four digs and a pair of blocks.

Christian Lyle led Savannah State (0-12) with six kills, and Alexis Washington added 11 digs.

The storyline
Georgia Southern scored 11 straight points in the first set with Kat Minnerly serving for 10 of them. The Eagles hit .370 in the set while holding the Tigers to -.038. Georgia Southern led 18-10 in the second set when Savannah State rattled off six straight points to cut the margin to 18-16. The Eagles finished the frame with a 7-0 run behind two kills by Chevalier, and Hannah Braun ended the set with a kill. Georgia Southern held the Tigers to .000 hitting in the third set and used a 9-2 run to overcome an early deficit.

"We worked on some things in practice that we executed well tonight, which is a positive. We still need to work on some mental things and not giving up the six-point runs, but we'll take care of it. We're focused in practice and going over scouting reports already, so we'll be prepared and excited to start conference play on Friday."

Next Up
The Eagles open conference play at home against defending Sun Belt Champion Little Rock at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Hanner Fieldhouse. Georgia Southern also plays host to ULM Saturday at 1 p.m.
