The Eagles take on ULM Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse
STATESBORO, Ga. – Edina Selimovic collected 17 kills, five digs and five blocks, and Little Rock held Georgia Southern to an .078 hitting percentage to post a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23-25-16) Sun Belt Conference volleyball victory the Eagles Friday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
It was the league opener for both teams, and Little Rock extended its win streak against conference opponents to 24 matches.
Ashley Jones led Georgia Southern (5-7, 0-1) with nine kills, and Crysten Curry posted six kills and five blocks. Alex Beecher had 25 digs, and Katie Bange notched 29 assists, nine digs and two blocks.
Carolee Dillard tallied 10 kills and four blocks for Little Rock (5-6, 1-0), and Marina Avram recorded eight kills and nine digs.
The storyline
Georgia Southern trimmed an eight-point deficit to 22-20 in the first set after a kill by Megan Chevalier. The Eagles fought off one set point before Avram put a ball down off an assist from Megan Mathis. The second set was tied 19-19 after a kill by Curry, but a 5-2 run by Little Rock, capped by a Selimovic kill, made the score 24-21. The Eagles scored two straight points on a Jones Kill and a block by Cathrine Murray and Lauren Reichard, but a service error gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead in the match. Georgia Southern hit -.065 and trailed by as many as 11 points in the third set.
Quotable from Coach Dustin Wood
"We're making too many mental errors, and they are coming at key points in the match. There are some errors that you can live with but ours are just brain-cramp type of plays. We did a good job of getting back into the set, but then we would shoot ourselves in the foot. That was the story of the match. We made mistakes at key times. We're working hard, and it's fixable. We do have some young kids out there but that's no excuse."
