Senior guard selected to one of the premiere showcases for NBA talent
STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern senior guard Jelani Hewitt is one of 64 players to earn a spot in the 2015 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. The showcase, in its 63rd year, brings the top-64 seniors to Portsmouth, Va. to play before NBA General Managers and scouts. The four-day event runs April 8-11 at Churchland High School Sports Complex and can be seen online at pit.keemotion.com.
Each year for 62 years the Portsmouth Invitational has invited 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) from across the nation to participate in a four-day, twelve-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. Over the years the P.I.T. has been a showcase for five of the 50 greatest players in NBA History (Rick Barry, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Dave Cowens, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen) and for many others who have gone on to NBA stardom.
Hewitt was named to the Cherry Bekaert team along with Amir Williams (Ohio State), David Laury (Iona), J.J. Avila (Colorado State), Treveon Graham (VCU), Ralston Turner (NC State), Wesley Saunders (Harvard), and D.J. Newbill (Penn State). The team begins play on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the tournament's opening game.
Hewitt was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year this season, leading the Eagles to a second place finish in the program's first campaign in the Sun Belt Conference. He was named a Lefty Driesell Defensive All-American recently, and led the Eagles with 17.6 ppg last season.
