NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Scott Wolfes recorded a 3-under-par 68, and the Georgia Southern counters played the final two holes of the day 5-under par to finish strong and post a 285 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club Friday.
Wolfes eagled hole 18, Matt Mierzejewski birdied holes 17 and 18, and Jake Storey birdied 18 as the Eagles picked up five strokes at the end of the round.
Vanderbilt (-4) leads its home tournament, while Kennesaw State and Georgia Tech (-1) are tied for second, two strokes ahead of Georgia Southern (+1). Alabama (+3) is fifth, and Louisville (+5) is in sixth.
Wolfes (-3) is tied for second with McCormick Clouser of Ball State, a shot back of Kennesaw's Kelby Burton. Seven players are jammed up at 2-under-par.
Storey (+1) and Mierzejewski are tied for 24th after posting 72s, and Kim Koivu finished with a 73. Individual Archer Price shot a 78, and Henry Mabbett carded an 83.
"The wind and firm greens made today's course very difficult," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "We hit a rough patch in the middle of the round but grinded out a good back 9."
Wolfes had a clean card except for a bogey on hole 10. The senior birdied holes 5 and 14 before scoring the eagle on hole 18. Storey was even after 14 holes before consecutive bogeys on holes 15 and 16 dropped him to 2-over. The freshman birdied 18 for the 73.
A birdie on hole 5 dropped Koivu to 1-under, but the senior bogeyed holes 6, 8 and 11 to fall to 2-over. He finished with seven straight pars for a 73.
Mierzejewski got rolling on hole 11 and played his last eight holes 4-under-par with birdies on holes 11 and 14 to go along with the two on 17 and 18.
"I'm proud of Matt for finishing his last eight holes 4-under, and Scott, Kim and Jake played well on the back nine to secure four good scores on a tough day," said Collins.
The Eagles are paired with Alabama and Louisville in the second round and will tee off hole 1 at 8:45 a.m. (CT). The third round is slated for Sunday.
"We have put ourselves in a good position heading into the weekend, and we're looking forward to getting started again," said Collins.
