Heavy rains end the game in the fifth inning
MOBILE, Ala.– Georgia Southern Softball dropped a rain-shortened 7-2 decision to No. 22South Alabama to close the three-game series against the Jaguars. Emily Snider's two-RBI double in the third gave the Eagles an early lead, but seven-straight runs by the Jags gave the home side the win. South Alabama loaded the bases in the fifth, but heavy rains ended the game early. Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Savannah State on Wednesday before hosting Troy next weekend.
The Eagles got things going in the third inning with their first hit in 8.2 innings as Kaitlyn Johnson singled to left. Emily Snider drove in the runs with a double down the left field line to score Johnson and Alesha Mann. The runs were the first for Georgia Southern in the series and staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead.
South Alabama's leadoff hitter Emily Messer answered straight-away by hitting an inside the park home run down the left field line off the first pitch. The run sparked a three-run third inning that saw the Jaguars take a 3-2 lead.
The Jags added three more runs in the fourth and loaded the bases in the fifth with one out. A walk pushed across a run to make it 7-2 as the teams were cleared from the field due to the heaviest rains of the day.
The teams waited a half hour before the game was called due to heavy rains.
Georgia Southern visits Savannah State on Wednesday afternoon for a midweek non-conference doubleheader. The games start at 5 p.m. in Chatham County.
