Atlanta, Ga. – In a regular season finale that was rife with changes, the Eagles could not earn a point as they fell to host Georgia State 0-4 in a match that was played the clinch. Impending inclement weather forced the match indoors with a later start time and only 4 singles matches were able to start at one time instead of the usual 6.
The highlight for the Eagles was at No. 3 doubles as
Christian Kerrigan and
Jose Landin were able to win their match against Andrei Andrukhou and Joseph Bishop 8-2.
"Our No. 3 doubles gave us a good start, but unfortunately their momentum didn't carry over to the other 2 courts," said Head Coach Alexander Koning. "Georgia State played well and very efficient. They took care of their opportunities early and never looked back."
At No. 1 doubles,
Ristomatti Lanne and
Kyle Hoffman fell to Zack Kennedy and Sofiane Chevallier 2-8, and
Albert Codina Sala and
Nico de Groof was setback by Jannis Koeke and Felipe Jaworski 7-8 (4-7).
Up 1-0 after doubles, Georgia State would go on to win the first 3 singles matches and thus clinch the match with the needed 4 points.
de Groof fell to Chevallier in the No. 4 singles position 2-6, 1-6, Codina Sala was defeated in the No. 2 slot by Kennedy 3-6, 0-6 and Hoffman was setback by Andrukhou at the No. 3 position 6-3, 2-6, 4-6.
The remaining matches were unfinished, however, Lanne was in the driver's seat at No. 1 with Koeke 6-4, 6-5 while Kerrigan had rallied in set 2 and was battling back with Jaworski in the No. 5 position 2-6, 2-0.
Concluded Koning, "Overall, the guys played a good regular season. We didn't always get the result, but we are battle tested for the conference tournament. I give them credit for staying motivated with all that they went through this year. We have some last minute details to work on and we will be ready to compete at the tournament."
The Eagles (8-13) now turn their attention to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament that will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana April 16-19. Tournament seeding has not yet been released.
